Have You Ever Experienced a Traumatic Event? Does it Seem That You Just Can’t Get Past It?

Traumatic events which threaten your safety or the safety of someone close to you can make feel frightened, sad, isolated or changed in a way you don’t understand.  That’s a normal reaction.

Sometimes, though, such events can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The public has become more aware of PTSD because it sometimes afflicts soldiers returning from wars abroad.

Shocking, overwhelming experiences that can lead to PTSD do include the horrors of war. However, trauma occurs to many people, not just soldiers! Events that can leave you feeling shattered and lead to PTSD include:

  • natural disasters like floods, fires, earthquakes
  • car accidents,
  • plane crashes,
  • terrorist attacks,
  • an unexpected injury or death of a loved one,
  • rape,  kidnapping, an assault causing bodily harm,
  • sexual, physical or emotional abuse
  • severe neglect, especially during childhood

PTSD occurs because some terrifying, horrifying events impress themselves so deeply into your awareness (and literally into your brain) that the overwhelming awful memories become seemingly impossible to forget or to put out of mind.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects as much as 3% of the adult population in the United States, according to some estimates. Have you ever experienced any of the following symptoms?

  • can’t forget the painful frightening event nor get it out of your mind
  • nightmares continue to disturb you
  • flashbacks haunt you even though you try everything possible to stop these intrusive events
  • high levels of anxiety
  • depression

Does it seem as though you will never get over what happened? Post-traumatic stress disorder is present when thoughts and feeling like those descried above go unresolved over a period lasting longer than six months.
